Stop me if you’ve heard this before. “You have to walk 10,000 steps a day.” This arbitrary number is feasible for many people but if you find yourself chained to a desk in our modern working world, then you understand the struggle of even getting 5000 steps a day.
When I started tracking my steps via a step tracker and my phone, I realized that between driving to work, working, and driving home, I was only getting about 3000 steps a day if I didn’t force myself to walk or go to the gym. This sent me. How could I possibly hit the magic 10,000 number? Then, something dawned on me. What was a number that I could comfortably hit with just a small change in my routine?
I started integrating a 20 minute lunch walk around the neighborhood during my lunch break and voila’ – easy 2500+ steps. With just a small tweak to my schedule, I nearly doubled my steps. I integrated walking into my gym routine and sometimes a walk after dinner and I’ve been able to hit 7000+ steps on a very consistent basis.
So my challenge to you is not to hit 10,000 or even 7000 steps like me. Find your base line daily steps using your phone or a cheap step tracker/pedometer. Add a thousand, two, or double it and give it a try. Find the power in “n” steps.
